Bangladesh will demand extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India! Mohammad Yunus announced

India-Bangladesh Relations: Bangladesh’s acting head and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, while addressing the nation on Sunday (17 November 2024), said that his government will demand the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Sheikh Hasina came to India after massive protests in August.

In his address on the 100th day of his tenure, Yunus said that his government will bring to justice all those who are responsible for the deaths during the student movements, including Hasina. He said, “We will try to bring back former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India.” He also asked to discuss this issue with Karim Khan, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Demand for cooperation from ICC against Hasina

The Yunus administration has requested assistance from the ICC along with domestic criminal cases against Sheikh Hasina and her associates. These investigations will include all human rights violations that took place during Hasina’s rule, especially cases of enforced disappearances. Bangladesh has also requested Interpol to issue a red notice to arrest Hasina and her associates.

Yunus said that the primary objective of his government is to hold new elections so that power can be handed over to an elected government. However, he has not given any deadline for the elections. Yunus said that first his government will implement reforms in many areas, including the electoral system. The deadline for elections will be announced only after the reforms.

Yunus described reports of the attack as “exaggerated” due to the growing radical Islamic influence on minority communities, especially Hindus. He said that his government will ensure the safety of minorities and any kind of religious imbalance will not be tolerated.
