Chandigarh PGI: The Chandigarh-based Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has taken strict action against the students who were absent from the Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat programme. PGI has banned 36 nursing students from leaving the hostel for a week. Last month, the 100th episode of the Prime Minister’s radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’ was aired.
The Chandigarh PGI administration had issued a written order regarding the Mann Ki Baat program aired on May 30. All the nursing students of the National Institute of Nursing were asked to participate in this.
Prohibition on leaving the girl students hostel
Even after the order, 36 girl students did not attend the Mann Ki Baat program. Among them, there were 28 girl students studying in the third year while there were 8 nursing students of the first year.
These nursing students did not give any reason for not attending the session, after which the PGI administration banned all of them from leaving the hostel for a week.
When questions arose, PGI gave clarification
This matter came into limelight when the information about the ban on girl students came to the fore. Along with this, questions were also raised on the decision to make it mandatory to listen to the Mann Ki Baat program, after which the Chandigarh PGI administration presented its clarification. The PGI has issued a statement saying that this instruction was given purely with the intention to enable them (students) to have a part of their regular curricular activities in which value education would be imparted to them by the best speakers, experts, professionals. Regular talks, guest lectures and discussions are arranged to do this.
The institute further said, in an earlier episode, the Prime Minister had interacted with an organ donor family to promote the noble cause of organ donation, which was highly morale-boosting. This transplant was done by PGI only.
The institute said, since some students remained absent from the program organized for them in the lecture theater without assigning any reason, the college authorities took action against them.
