BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile: The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired from the Indian Navy’s frontline guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao. Navy officials gave this information on Sunday (May 14). He said that the test of this missile shows the firepower and strength of the Navy at sea.
“The new guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao successfully hit a target during its maiden trial of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile,” a Navy official said. INS Mormugao is a Visakhapatnam-class stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy. There is another ship. It was built at Mazagon Dock Limited and was launched on 17 September 2016. The ship was commissioned on 18 December 2022.
self-sufficiency in weapon systems
The naval officer said, “The indigenously developed ship and its weapon system is another shining example of self-reliance and naval power at sea.” However, the location of the missile test is yet to be known. BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited is an Indo-Russian joint venture, which manufactures supersonic cruise missiles. These missiles can be fired from submarines, ships and aircraft or ground ‘platforms’. It is named after the Brahmaputra River of India and the Moskva River of Russia.
The firepower of BrahMos missile is 290 km. And it is the world’s fastest cruise missile with a speed of Mach 2.8 (almost three times the speed of sound). This missile can work day and night despite bad weather. It works on the principle of “fire and forget” i.e. it does not require guidance after launch. India is also exporting BrahMos missiles. In January last year, India signed a $375 million deal with the Philippines for the supply of three batteries of the missile.
