What about RBI’s decision?
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation after September 2023. Notes of this denomination can be exchanged in banks from May 23. The RBI said in a statement released in the evening that the Rs 2,000 notes currently in circulation will continue to be legal tender.
RBI has asked the banks to provide the facility of depositing and exchanging these notes till 30 September. Rs 2,000 notes can be exchanged in banks from May 23. However, only notes worth Rs 20,000 will be exchanged at a time. Along with this, RBI has asked banks to stop giving Rs 2,000 notes with immediate effect. In November 2016, the RBI issued Rs 2,000 notes after removing the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from circulation.
