More than 70 people died, thousands left their homes
Significantly, on May 3, violence broke out during the Tribal Unity March in Manipur in protest against the demand of the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. More than 70 people have lost their lives in clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since the violence began.
Internet services were also suspended in the state. During the violence, property worth crores was set on fire and thousands of people were forced to leave their homes. Those who are now living in relief camps set up by the government. The Kuki community alleges that the state government led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh is targeting them with the aim of driving them from their homes in the forests and hills.
Deployed army and paramilitary forces
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured action against those involved in the violence and met representatives of both the communities. The population of Meitei community in Manipur is about 53 percent and they mostly live in Imphal Valley. Tribal communities – including the Nagas and Kukis – constitute about 40 per cent of the population and live in the hill districts.
