PM Modi Degree Case: A court in Ahmedabad in Gujarat has issued fresh summons to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh on Tuesday (May 23) in the matter of Prime Minister Modi’s degree. Both have been asked to appear on June 7 in a criminal defamation case filed by Gujarat University regarding the PM’s academic degree.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate SJ Panchal has issued summons to Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh. The court was told that it appears that the summons issued earlier to both of them to appear on May 23 have not been received as neither of them is present in the court.
“Summon not yet received”
The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jayesh Chowatia had issued summons to senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders in a criminal defamation complaint for their ‘sarcastic’ and ‘derogatory’ statements against Gujarat University regarding Prime Minister Modi’s educational degree. Pranab Thakkar, head of the legal cell of AAP’s Gujarat unit, had said on Monday that Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh have not yet received the summons issued by the court.
Had to appear in court today
The counsel for Gujarat University on Tuesday informed the new judge SJ Panchal about the matter and said that his predecessor had issued notices to the accused on April 15 to appear before the court on May 23. Since no one is present in the court, it is not clear whether they received the summons or not. On this, the judge asked the staff member to see it and then directed him to issue summons to Kejriwal and Singh.
The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jayesh Chowatia had summoned the two leaders after taking cognizance that a prima facie case appeared against them under section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.
