Karnataka Water Demand: The water situation has become dire in some districts of Karnataka. In Karnataka, the border villages are thirsty due to the drying up of the Krishna river bed. This is the reason that Karnataka has to depend on Maharashtra for water. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde Has written a letter requesting to release additional three TMC water from Koyna dam into Krishna river.

Many districts of North Karnataka are facing acute water shortage since March 2023 due to scorching heat. A request has been made by the Government of Karnataka to release ‘three TMC’ water from Koyna dam into Krishna river and ‘three TMC’ water from Ujani dam into Bhima river. In his letter, Siddaramaiah has also mentioned about the scorching heat prevailing in the northern districts of Karnataka.

Demand to release water immediately

The Chief Minister wrote in his letter, “Districts of North Karnataka like Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadgiri and Raichur are facing acute shortage of drinking water since March, 2023 due to the scorching heat. People here need water for domestic use.” Monsoon has not yet started in North Karnataka, so the petition demands that Maharashtra release water immediately.

Maharashtra gives water to Belgaum-Bagalkot

Let us tell you that every year Maharashtra provides water to the border villages of Belgaum and Bagalkot districts from a humanitarian point of view. There is often a dispute between the two states regarding the Belgaum border issue. Due to the scarcity of water, the water resources of Krishna river are protected by mutual consent of both the states. If Karnataka needs it in summer, Maharashtra gives it Krishna water.
