Know about Justice Amit P Mehta
The full name of Justice Amit P Mehta of the District Court of Columbia, America is Amit Priyavdan Mehta. He is an American lawyer and has been working as a District Judge of the United States District Court in Columbia since 2014. Justice Amit P Mehta was appointed to the District Court of the District of Columbia on 22 December 2014. Former US President Barack Obama approved his appointment.

- Amit Mehta was born in Patan, Gujarat in 1971 and at the age of one his parents took him to America.
- Born in Patan, Gujarat, Amit Mehta obtained a BA degree in Political Science and Economics from Georgetown University in 1993.
- Received JD from University of Virginia School of Law in 1997.
- After law school, Judge Mehta worked in the San Francisco office of the law firm Latham & Watkins LLP before clerking for the Honorable Susan P. Graber of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
- Following his clerkship, Judge Mehta worked at the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Zuckerman Spader LLP from 1999 to 2002.
- In 2002, Judge Mehta joined the District of Columbia Public Defender Service as a staff attorney. Judge Mehta returned to Zuckerman Spaeder in 2007, where his practice focuses on white-collar criminal defense, difficult business disputes, and appellate advocacy.
- In 2021, Amit P. Mehta became a judge of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Amit Mehta has notably presided over trials related to the United States Capitol attack on January 6, 2021 and the Google antitrust case.

Amit Mehta has previously ruled on cases related to the January 6 Capitol riots, rejecting former President Donald Trump’s efforts to dismiss civil lawsuits holding him accountable for inciting the riots. In 2022, he wrote in a decision rejecting Donald Trump’s efforts to dismiss lawsuits accusing the former president of legal responsibility for the attacks, “Depriving the President of immunity from civil damages is no small step. The Court fully understands the gravity of its decision.”

Judge Amit Mehta has served on the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project and is a former co-chair of the District of Columbia Bar’s Criminal Law and Individual Rights Section Steering Committee. He is also a former director of Facilitating Leadership in Youth, a non-profit organization (NGO) dedicated to providing after-school activities and mentoring to at-risk youth.
