National mourning day is observed on 15 August in Bangladesh because Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on this day. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of independent Bangladesh and the father of the nation, was killed along with his family at his home in Dhanmondi, capital Dhaka, on 15 August 1975. This massacre was carried out by an army unit.

Hasina appealed to observe a day of mourning
A new controversy has started after the new government of Bangladesh cancelled the 15th August holiday. The new government of Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina have come face to face on this issue. Sheikh Hasina has opposed this decision and asked the common Bangladeshis to observe a day of mourning. Sheikh Hasina said, ‘I appeal to you to observe the day of mourning on 15th August with full reverence and dignity.
