Setback for Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana, will be extradited to India, court orders

Mumbai Terror Attacks : The US court has given a big blow to Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, who was involved in the Mumbai terror attacks. The court has said that he can be extradited to India under the extradition treaty. Tahawwur Rana is accused of being involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

Continuous efforts were being made to extradite him from America to India. Now the appellate court said that Tahawwur Rana can be extradited to India soon. In its decision delivered on August 15, the court said that the India-US extradition treaty allows Rana’s extradition. Rana had filed a petition in the US Court of Appeals for Ninth Circuit against the order of the US District Court in California. The California court had rejected his petition. In the petition, he had challenged the order of extradition to India for Rana’s alleged involvement in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The panel of judges agreed that Rana’s crime falls under the terms of the extradition treaty between the United States and India.

Spent 7 years in jail, then the court gave the order
Pakistani citizen Rana was tried in a US district court for supporting the organization that carried out the terrorist attacks in Mumbai. The jury convicted Rana of providing assistance to a foreign terrorist organization and conspiring to provide assistance in a failed plot to carry out terrorist attacks in Denmark. However, this jury acquitted Rana of the charge of conspiring to help in terrorist attacks related to the attacks in India. Rana served 7 years in jail for the charges under which he was convicted and after his release, India requested his extradition to prosecute him for his involvement in the Mumbai attacks. The magistrate judge had issued a certificate to extradite him. Rana, who is in a US jail, is facing charges of involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

The terrorists had killed more than 160 people
Tahawwur Rana is a Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman who is accused of supporting the organization that carried out the terrorist attack in Mumbai. In 2008, 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists who came by boat from Pakistan held Mumbai hostage for 60 hours. The terrorists killed more than 160 people. In retaliation, the security forces killed 9 terrorists on the spot, while one terrorist Ajmal Kasab was caught alive, who was later hanged. 26 foreign nationals were also among those killed in the Mumbai terrorist attack.
