How much salary do officers coming through lateral entry get, what is the difference from a proper IAS?

Difference Between Later Entry & Regular Recruitment, Since the announcement of recruitment for 45 posts through lateral entry, there has been a ruckus between the government and the opposition. Today this recruitment has been withdrawn and now candidates will not be appointed on these posts. In this environment, if you are also wondering what is lateral entry, how it happens and how is it different from regular IAS, then we will answer your questions.

what is the matter

On 17th August, a notification was published for recruitment to 45 posts of Joint Secretary, Director and Central Ministry. The special thing was that the candidates were to be selected for these posts through lateral recruitment. The posts which are filled after getting promotion by IAS, IPS or IOFS i.e. Group A Services, recruitment was done to fill them without giving this exam.

The opposition criticized the government for not providing reservation for these posts and said that this is injustice to a particular category of candidates. The debate continued and the question kept arising as to how far is it appropriate to recruit through lateral entry for the posts on which candidates reach after clearing the toughest examination in the country.

what is lateral entry

Under lateral entry, candidates holding high positions in private companies outside the government and having long experience in their field get appointment on various posts in the central ministry. They do not have to give any kind of examination and selection is done only on the basis of interview. A committee is formed which interviews them.

However, there are some conditions that the candidate has to fulfill. For example, in this recruitment, the age limit for the candidate was fixed between 35 and 45 years. It is necessary that he has worked in the relevant field for at least 15 years. Overall, subject experts are hired here who are appointed on the basis of practical knowledge and not on the basis of bookish knowledge.

The job is for a few years

The tenure of candidates holding these high posts through lateral entry is three years. Looking at their performance, it can be extended to five years. Talking about salary, the monthly salary of the selected candidates can be up to 2.32 lakhs. Talking about fixed salary, it is fixed at 1.52 lakhs. Broadly speaking, when an IAS or related officer reaches these posts after working for several years and getting promotion, he also gets the same salary.

Why is there a ruckus

In this uproar, many issues are being raised from reservation to keeping outsiders in the ministry. This recruitment was started during the time of UPA government. However, now it has been withdrawn.

If we talk about the difference from regular IAS, then there are many differences between these two recruitments. To become an IAS or IPS officer, these posts are obtained after beating the competition of lakhs of candidates and then taking training and working in the department for years. Lateral entry holders are selected on the basis of their work, experience and skills. They do not give any written examination nor do they face any competition.
