The king donated all his wealth to Vishwamitra with the spirit of truthfulness. To pay the donation, King Harishchandra sold his wife, son and himself. King Harishchandra was bought by a person of Dom caste, who used to do cremation at the cremation ground. King Harishchandra became the servant of a Chandal. The king also did the work of procuring shroud for the Chandal, but even after doing this objectionable work, he never left the path of truth.
After many years of doing this work, King Harishchandra started regretting his work and started looking for a way to get rid of it. King Harishchandra always tried to find a way to get rid of this work. Once the king met Gautam Rishi, the king bowed to Gautam Rishi and told him his sorrowful story.
