1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case: Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Friday (August 30) has ordered framing of charges against former Congress MP Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. This case is related to the killing of Sikhs in Delhi’s Pul Bangash area.
A Delhi court has ordered framing of charges of murder and other offences against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, PTI reported.
three people were murdered
The case dates back to 1 November 1984 when Gurdwara Pul Bangash located at Azad Market was set on fire by a mob and three people named Sardar Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Gurcharan Singh were burnt to death.
What is the allegation against Jagdish Tytler?
The incident took place a day after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She was shot by her Sikh bodyguards. In its chargesheet filed before the court, the CBI has said that Tytler incited the mob gathered at the gurdwara, which led to the burning of the gurdwara and the killing of three people.
The CBI, citing a witness, had alleged in its chargesheet that Tytler got out of a white Ambassador car in front of Gurdwara Pul Bangash on November 1, 1984 and incited the mob to kill Sikhs. The investigating agency has filed charges against former Union minister Tytler under sections 147 (rioting), 109 (incitement) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
It is worth mentioning that on October 31, 1984, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards, after which anti-Sikh riots broke out in many parts of the country. A sessions court had granted anticipatory bail to Tytler in this case in August last year. The court had also imposed some conditions on Tytler during this period.
