Will India send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh? The Foreign Ministry has made it clear

India On Sheikh Hasina Extradition: India on Friday (August 30, 2024) refused to elaborate on the issue of any possible demand from Bangladesh for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, India acknowledged that work on development projects has come to a halt due to unrest in the neighboring country.

‘Sheikh Hasina came to India for security reasons’

According to the Hindustan Times report, when asked about the possibility of Bangladesh’s interim government seeking Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that this is a case based on hypothetical issues. He said that we have said this earlier also that the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh came to India in a very short time due to security reasons.

Sheikh Hasina stepped down on 5 August 2024 after weeks of student-led protests against her government and fled to India. She is currently in a safe place, although Indian authorities have not given any information about her whereabouts. Several opposition parties in Bangladesh have demanded the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

Many projects were affected

Randhir Jaiswal said that bilateral projects have been affected due to the turmoil in Bangladesh. He said, “Once the situation in Bangladesh stabilizes and normalcy is restored, we will talk to the interim government there and see how those projects can be worked on further.”

After the coup, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India, but now it is very difficult for her to go anywhere else from here. The new interim government has filed more than 30 cases of murder, massacre and kidnapping against Sheikh Hasina. These include 26 cases of murder, 4 of massacre and one case of kidnapping.
