Social media company X (formerly Twitter) refused to appoint a legal officer in Brazil, after which Supreme Court Justice Alexander de Morias has issued an order to ban X across the country. On Wednesday (30 August 2024), the judge gave Elon Musk’s company a deadline to appoint a legal officer within 24 hours. Earlier, X closed its office on August 17, claiming to have received threats to put its old legal officer in jail.
A fine of 18 million riyals was also imposed
According to news agency Xinhua, the X company was embroiled in controversy with Justice de Morais for not complying with court orders for several months. The dispute was to remove officials who were promoting news of coup in the country and content that undermined democracy. On Friday (31 August 2024), Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) also imposed a fine of 18 million reals (about $ 3.2 million) on X for not complying.
X ignored the court order
The judge upheld the Federal Court’s decision, saying that the company repeatedly and deliberately ignored court orders and was also not willing to pay the fine imposed. X was accused of circumventing Brazil’s legal system in the 2024 municipal elections and creating a lawless zone on social media.
Justice De Morais further said that X had facilitated the actions of extremist groups and digital terrorists, helping to spread Nazi, racist, fascist, hateful and anti-democratic speech." The Brazilian judge also ordered the country’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to block X within 24 hours. Apple and Google have five days to remove X’s app from their online stores.
In addition, any person or company that uses methods such as VPN to access X after the ban has been lifted will be fined 50,000 riyals (about $10,000) per day.
