Heavy rain warning issued in Andhra Pradesh too

There is a possibility of rain in many places in Andhra Pradesh and heavy rainfall may also occur at some places. Heavy rains are likely in parts of Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram, Parvatipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Kakinada and Nandyal districts, an official release said.

Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority Managing Director R. Kurmandha alerted people living in low-lying areas and said a level 1 warning has been issued at Prakasam barrage in Vijayawada due to the overflowing of Krishna river, causing heavy water flow.

CM Chandrababu Naidu addressed the public

Addressing a press conference at the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) in Tadepalli, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the state has received heavy rains. Naidu said, ‘Due to heavy rains, Vijayawada and Guntur cities are completely submerged. The Vijayawada-Guntur National Highway at Kaza and the Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway at Jaggaiyapeta are completely submerged.’

According to the Chief Minister, Jaggayyapeta received 26 cm of rain in 24 hours, while 14 mandals recorded more than 20 cm of rain. In Rajarajeswari Peta of the city, people were seen wading through chest-deep water on a submerged road. He said 94 other places in 14 districts received rainfall between seven to 12 cm.

According to the Chief Minister, the flood water which was supposed to be diverted towards Kolleru lake was turning towards Vijayawada and resulting in flooding in the city. Speaking about the steps being taken to deal with the rain-related problems, Naidu said, “We are increasing the security in the downstream areas of Prakasam barrage with sand bags and other means and have also alerted the district collectors.”

‘More than 1.1 lakh hectares of agricultural area, 7,360 hectares of horticultural area damaged’

Naidu said that arrangements for food are being made for the people in the rehabilitation centres.
