Rajiv Bhattacharjee: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Rajeev Bhattacharya on Tuesday (September 3) won the only Rajya Sabha seat from Tripura by a margin of 37 votes. Bhattacharya, the state unit president of the BJP, got the support of 47 MLAs, while 10 MLAs voted for Marxist Communist Party (CPI-M) candidate Sudhan Das.
According to news agency PTI, Congress, which has three MLAs in the 60-member assembly of the state, did not participate in the voting for the Rajya Sabha seat. Assembly Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul told news agency PTI, “As expected, Bhattacharya won the Rajya Sabha seat as all the MLAs of the ruling coalition voted in his favour.”

The BJP leader thanked the MLAs who voted in his favour in the elections. Bhattacharya said, “I am grateful to all the MLAs who supported me in the elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister thanked them for keeping faith in me amit shah And I also specially thank the National President of BJP.
Promise to the people
The BJP’s Tripura unit chief promised that he would do everything possible for the development of the state and its people as a member of the upper house of Parliament. Bhattacharya had contested the assembly elections last year, but did not win.
Congress kept away from voting
The ruling BJP has 33 members in the assembly, while its ally Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has 13 and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has one MLA. The opposition Congress party kept away from voting, alleging violence in the recent three-tier panchayat elections. A by-election has been held on the Rajya Sabha seat that fell vacant after Biplab Kumar Deb was elected a Lok Sabha member. After being elected a Rajya Sabha member, Bhattacharya expressed his gratitude to the central leadership and said that he is also grateful to BJP’s allies TMP and IPFT.
