‘If Haseena had remained silent, we would have forgotten, but because of what she is saying…’, said Mohammad Yunus

Bangladesh’s interim government chief Mohammad Yunus has said that the way former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is making political comments while sitting in India is not appropriate. Mohammad Yunus also said that until Dhaka requests her extradition, she should remain silent so that the relations between the two countries do not become uncomfortable.

In an interview with news agency PTI, Mohammad Yunus said, “If India wants to keep Sheikh Hasina with it until Bangladesh calls her back, then the condition will be that Sheikh Hasina will have to keep quiet.” Mohammad Yunus stressed that Bangladesh values ​​strong relations with India but New Delhi will have to rise above the thinking in which it sees all political parties other than the Awami League as Islamic pirates. India feels that without Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh will become like Afghanistan.

Amid the ongoing protests in the country, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and took refuge in India. After this, Mohammad Yunus was appointed the head of the interim government. Mohammad Yunus said, ‘Nobody in India likes this attitude of hers, so we want to bring Sheikh Hasina back as soon as possible and prosecute her… She is in India and is making statements that create problems. If she had remained silent, we would have forgotten it, but sitting in India, she is speaking and giving instructions. Nobody is liking this.’

Apparently, Mohammad Yunus was referring to Sheikh Hasina’s statement of August 13 in which she demanded justice and said that those involved in the recent terrorist acts, murders and barbarism should be identified and punished. Mohammad Yunus said, ‘This is neither good for India nor for us. There is a problem with this.’ Sheikh Hasina has left Bangladesh and is in India for about four weeks, due to which there is a round of speculation in Bangladesh. When asked whether Bangladesh has informed India of its stand, Mohammad Yunus said that it has been said verbally and quite firmly that she (Hasina) should remain silent.

He said, ‘Everyone understands this. We have firmly said that she should keep quiet. This is unfriendly behavior towards us. She has been given shelter there and she is running the campaign from there. It is not that she has gone in normal circumstances but she has fled after the rebellion and public anger of the people.’ Mohammad Yunus said that the interim government is committed to ensuring justice for the people of Bangladesh and for justice it is necessary that she should be brought back to the country. The head of the interim government stressed, ‘Yes, she has to be brought back, otherwise the people of Bangladesh will not get peace. For the kind of atrocities she has committed, a trial should be held against her here in front of everyone.’
