On the day of Karva Chauth, earthen pots are used to offer Arghya to the Moon. The word Karva means earthen pot. Karva is a symbol of the five elements.

The clay is made by melting it in water which symbolizes the earth element and water element, it is dried with sun and wind which symbolizes the sky element and air element and then the karva is made by heating it in fire.

In this way, by drinking water from an earthen pot, the husband and wife wish to make their married life happy by making both the five elements and God as witnesses in their relationship.

While performing the puja on the day of Karva Chauth, it is necessary to have two karvas in your plate. One of these karwa belongs to the married woman and from the other karwa, after offering Arghya to the moon, the husband drinks water from it.

On the day of Karva Chauth, at the time of puja, fill some water in the Karva and cover it with a lamp and keep a one rupee coin in it. Place a red cloth over it. On this day, people keep different things filled in the Karwa as per the belief. Some people fill Karva with wheat, while some people also fill it with rice or kheel.

After the puja of Karva Chauth, the daughters-in-law give the karva kept in the puja and the entire material for the wedding ceremony to the mother-in-law and seek blessings. If you do not have a mother-in-law, then get it done to any other married woman who is older than you or from the same family as your mother.
