India Canada Row: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s problems are increasing on both the domestic and foreign fronts. Justin Trudeau is facing opposition from his own party because the MPs of his party Liberal are now urging him not to contest the elections for the fourth time. Party MPs have given them a deadline of 28 October 2024 to take a decision. According to the report of news agency AP, some Liberal MPs said that he should resign from his post by October 28.
Trudeau’s own party’s MPs turned against him
Earlier, about 20 MPs had agreed to sign the demand to remove Justin Trudeau from the post. Meanwhile, after meeting with several members of his political party, Justin Trudeau said with a smile that the Liberals are strong and united. However, the changed attitude of his party’s MPs tells a different story.
‘Liberal Party’s popularity is falling’
Liberal MP from Newfoundland, Canada, Ken MacDonald (of Justin Trudeau’s party) said that Justice Trudeau will have to listen to the people. According to Macdonald, he has also signed the letter removing Trudeau, although it has not been made public yet. Macdonald, an MP from Justin Trudeau’s party, said there are many of his colleagues who want to contest the upcoming election, but are nervous because of poor polling numbers and the Liberals’ declining popularity.
This letter was reportedly read during the meeting of Liberals. In this meeting that lasted for three hours, the MPs of his party argued against PM Trudeau for resigning and not contesting the elections for the fourth term. Justin Trudeau had earlier said that he was planning to contest elections again. However, he did not answer the questions posed by the MPs’ letter after the meeting.
Liberal Party got defeated in recent elections
In the last 100 years, no Canadian Prime Minister has been able to win elections four times in a row. Trudeau’s Liberal Party recently faced defeat in the elections held in two districts of Toronto and Montreal, due to which doubts have arisen over Trudeau’s leadership within the party. Justice Trudeau has not yet signed the letter given by Liberal MPs. However, the Prime Minister said that he will consider the demands of the MPs.
