Japan Election: Parliamentary elections are not giving good signs for Japan’s PM Shigeru Ishiba. According to Japanese media reports, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) also did not succeed in gaining the lead. At the same time, LDP’s ally Komeito had to face a crushing defeat on Sunday (October 27) and was not successful in gaining majority in the lower house. Because of this, for the first time in 15 years, it is being seen that Ishiba will now have to include a third party in the alliance to remain in power.

The recent elections in Japan are the first nationwide voting since the ‘slush fund scandal’ which rocked the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Because of this, public confidence in the party decreased. Because of this, Fumio Kishida had to resign from the post of Prime Minister. On the other hand, in the current election, the Liberal Democratic Party could not achieve majority on its own, while the LDP’s biggest rival, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, performed better.

Shigeru Ishiba’s bet backfires
According to NHK, the LDP and its coalition partner Komeito managed to secure only 215 of the 465 seats in the House of Representatives, falling short of the 233 seats needed to reach a majority. The results are a major blow to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, whose move to call a snap election to consolidate his position after taking office this month backfired dramatically.

Huge decline in LDP seats
Before the elections, the LDP and its coalition partner Komeito had a stable majority of 279 seats. Whereas LDP alone had 247 seats. The LDP won only 191 seats in Sunday’s elections, its worst result since 2009. Because of this the party had to face its biggest defeat.
