The presidential election held in America in the year 1872 was the most unusual election in history. The then President Eunice S. Grant was running for his second term. At the same time, in opposition to him was Horace Greeley, the founder and editor of the New York Tribune. Greeley was known as a vocal critic of the Grant administration. In the then election, Grant also had to face division in the Republican Party, yet Grant defeated Greeley. But due to one incident this election became strange.

Just days after the popular vote, New York Tribune founder and presidential candidate Horace Greeley died. After which he became a dead candidate. After Greeley’s death, the Electoral College faced the problem of how to elect a candidate who had already died.

Republican leaders made Greeley their candidate

Not everyone in the party was happy with Eunice Grant becoming the party’s candidate again. Two factions were formed within the party and Grant’s opponents saw this as an opportunity. Then supported Greeley by forming a temporary alliance with Liberal Republicans.
