However, despite the excitement of choosing a new shade, there is often a worry associated with coloring hair. Premature graying. A common belief especially in Indian homes. It states that changing the natural color of your hair with dyes or chemical products will inevitably lead to graying of your hair. This belief has been going on for years. Due to which many people avoid coloring their hair.

Does hair coloring really make your hair gray, or is it just a myth that’s stopping you from getting the hair makeup of your dreams? The irony is that the answer is not black or white – it lies somewhere in the gray hair itself.

Whether hair coloring or not, the problem of premature graying of hair is increasing at an alarming rate among the younger generation (Millennials and Gen Z). Experts blame it on genetics, nutritional deficiencies, stress, unhealthy lifestyle like drinking and smoking, multiple medical conditions and environmental factors like pollution, UV rays and oxidative stress.

Graying of hair is mainly influenced by three factors. Genetic predisposition, sun exposure and stress. The graying process occurs when melanocytes, the cells that produce color in hair follicles, reduce their activity or die. This is a natural biological process and is not triggered by coloring the hair.

Hair coloring is not directly related to hair graying and there is currently no meta-analysis or sufficient scientific evidence to support such a relationship. Hair coloring only affects the outer layer of your hair. But not the hair follicles, which determine the color. However, continuous use of harsh chemical colors damages your hair by making it lifeless and brittle. But they are not going to cause your hair to turn gray overnight.
