Pakistan Violence: The government of Pakistan’s Punjab province said on Monday (November 25) that one policeman was killed and 70 others were injured in a clash with security personnel deployed to prevent supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and protesters from reaching Islamabad. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari said that several policemen were taken hostage after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters clashed with the police on their way to Islamabad.
Bukhari had called for nationwide protests on November 24 after former Prime Minister Khan, 72, condemned the stolen mandate, unjust arrests of people and the passage of the 26th Amendment. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Monday resumed its march towards Islamabad after halting overnight en route amid stiff resistance from authorities to foil its attempt to enter the capital and stage a sit-in.
‘At least 70 policemen injured’
Azma Bukhari said, “Khan’s supporters are going to enter the national capital and hold a protest at D-Chowk, located near several important government buildings like Rashtrapati Bhavan, Prime Minister’s Office, Parliament and the Supreme Court. He said that at least 70 policemen have been injured and one has died in the clashes. The condition of five policemen is critical.”
‘Imran Khan’s wife is provoking Pashtuns’
The minister asked, “Constable Mubashir lost his life in a clash with party workers on Kati Hill while going to Islamabad. I ask those who call them a political party whether they will say so even after this. Is it politics to take police officers hostage on behalf of Imran Khan’s supporters?” Bukhari said, “Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi is setting fire to this country. Bushra is provoking the Pashtuns (Pathans) to get her husband released.
‘More than 3,500 party leaders and workers arrested’
Khan has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since last year and according to his party, more than 200 cases are registered against him. Bukhari said that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed the police officers to remain unarmed. However, he said, Khan’s party workers came from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with weapons to create havoc and incite violence. Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf said that police in Punjab and Islamabad have arrested more than 3,500 party leaders and workers.
