Delhi News: Experts at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi have advised people to maintain the level of Vitamin D in the body amid air pollution in the city. He has given this advice when there is not sufficient amount of sunlight amidst smog. Sunlight is the best source of Vitamin D.
Dr Ravindra Goswami, Professor, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, AIIMS, said, people of all age groups can consider taking Vitamin D during winter as per the advice of their doctors. Along with this, if the quantity of cholecalciferol is like 60,000 IU then it can be taken without knowing the level of Vitamin D in the body. Active forms such as calcitriol should not be taken as they are used to treat kidney disease.

He said, cholecalciferol is good and most economical. It gets converted into active form in the body in a controlled manner without toxicity. Unnecessary intake of vitamins can cause heart related problems. Ravindra Goswami said, in the study of the department, the level of Vitamin D has been found to be normal in Delhiites working outside home.
He said, when assessing the vitamin D status of people working outdoors like hawkers or roadside vendors, petrol pump staff, auto rickshaw drivers, traffic police personnel and gardeners, it was found that without any supplement, the vitamin D status was 10 in the morning. Due to adequate exposure to sunlight from 1 pm to 2 pm, the level of Vitamin D was found to be around 20 nanograms per milliliter.
The expert said, vitamin D deficiency was found in people working indoors without external supplements. Dr. Soma Saha, a researcher in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, said that the incidence of Vitamin D deficiency in construction workers is essentially related to prolonged exposure to sunlight.
