The job of the police department is to maintain law and order in the country. For this, different responsibilities and posts have been created. Some of these important posts are SSP (Senior Superintendent of Police), SP (Superintendent of Police) and DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police). Although these three posts are of the same level, their functioning and responsibilities may differ in different circumstances. Let us know what is the difference between these posts and who is considered the biggest officer.
If in the police system of any state, SSP and SP are considered as the heads of the district police. In smaller districts, the Superintendent of Police (SP) is appointed as the head of the district, while in larger districts, the responsibility is entrusted to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). However, the functionality and power in both these positions are almost the same. Only IPS officers (Indian Police Service) are deployed on these. In some big states like Uttar Pradesh, sometimes DIG rank officers are also appointed as SSP.

What is the work of DCP?
DCPs (Deputy Commissioners of Police) are posted mainly in those metros and districts where the Commissionerate system is implemented. This system is prevalent in union territories and big cities. DCPs are responsible for law and order and crime control in their area. In the commissionerate system, DCPs report directly to the Police Commissioner and not to the state DGP (Director General of Police). In such a situation, DCP is the biggest officer in the areas with commissionerate system.
What is the similarity in all three positions?
There is not much difference in powers and responsibilities between SSP, SP and DCP. The batch and star on the uniform of these officers are the same. The main job of all three posts is to maintain law and order and peace in their respective areas.
