Bangladesh: Human rights organization Center for Democracy, Pluralism and Human Rights (CDPHR) on Friday (December 13, 2024) released a report highlighting the situation of minorities in Bangladesh after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power in August 2024. The report titled ‘Bangladesh Minorities Under Siege: A Wake-up Call for the International Community’ details incidents of violence and unrest affecting the Hindu community in the country in the wake of political changes. According to the report, between August 5 and 9, after Hasina’s resignation, 190 cases of looting were registered, 32 houses were set on fire, 16 temples were desecrated and two incidents of sexual violence were recorded.

Total 2,010 cases of violence against Hindus

It said there was a significant increase in the number of incidents reported till August 20, which included a total of 2,010 cases of violence against Hindus, desecration of 69 temples and attacks on 157 families. The report claims that despite the formation of the interim government under the leadership of Mohammad Yunus on August 8, the situation of religious minorities is continuously worsening.

Call for international action

Prerna Malhotra, chair of CDPHR and director of the Department of Hindu Studies at Delhi University, described the situation as a “civilizational tragedy” and called for international action on the plight of minorities in Bangladesh. The report explores wider geopolitical implications for India, with historian Kapil Kumar warning that the rise in radicalism in Bangladesh poses a potential security threat to neighboring India. It also includes several recommendations to deal with violence against minorities in Bangladesh.

‘Action should be taken against extremist groups’

The report calls for the establishment of a UN-backed commission to investigate atrocities, the deployment of peacekeeping forces and targeted sanctions against those responsible for the violence. The report urges the interim government of Bangladesh to maintain secular constitutional values, restore minority rights and take action against extremist groups. It also recommends that international bodies, including Western countries and India, apply diplomatic and economic pressure to ensure the safety of minorities.
