Is there a risk of kidney and heart related diseases due to high BP? Know the causes and symptoms

The pressure of blood on the walls of blood vessels when your heart pumps blood is known as blood pressure. An increase in the force exerted by blood on the blood vessels while passing through the body is called high blood pressure or hypertension. It is diagnosed when the BP reading is consistently above 130/80 on repeated checks in a healthcare office. The top value is systolic BP which reflects the pressure when the heart beats and pushes blood through the vessels. The lowest value represents the pressure during relaxation of the blood vessels between heart beats.

What are the kidneys and what do they do?

When we spoke to Dr. Madhav Sanjagiri, Consultant, Urology at Manipal Hospital, Goa, he explained that our kidneys are a pair of organs that work to remove waste products and excess water from our blood circulation by producing urine on a regular basis. We do.

Problem in heart function: Hypertension is persistently elevated blood pressure levels, putting pressure on the heart to pump blood through greater resistance. This extra workload causes hypertrophy of the heart muscle, especially the left ventricle of the heart. This reduces heart function and may result in heart failure.

Damage to blood vessels: High blood pressure affects the endothelial lining of the arteries, causing them to harden, become susceptible to degenerative changes, or develop atherosclerosis. This increases the chances of blockages which in turn lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Risk of Coronary Artery Disease: High blood pressure prolongs the process of atherosclerosis, which hinders the blood supply to the myocardium. This reduces the oxygen supply and can lead to angina or myocardial infarction.

Heart rhythm problems: High blood pressure can also cause remodeling of the heart’s electrical system and therefore result in arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. These abnormal heart rhythms increase the chances of blood clots and stroke.

Heart failure: If left neglected, high blood pressure affects the heart muscle. This can lead to heart failure, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood as efficiently as needed around the body. Controlling high blood pressure through diet, screening and medications is important to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system in the future. Preventing high blood pressure in its early stages helps avoid more serious cardiovascular events.
