what is sutak
Sutak is a kind of time of impurity and abstinence, when due to some special event, religious functions, puja, havan etc. are not performed in the family.
According to Garuda Purana, when a member of the family dies, Sutak i.e. Patak is placed there. This period is a time of mental peace and mourning after death. In Sutak, the family members usually have to observe it for 10 to 13 days (Thirteenth) before the cremation. In some places Sutak is valid for 40 days.
Sutak rules for wife after husband’s death
- After the death of the husband, the wife is prohibited from going to the temple, performing puja, participating in religious, social programs or festivals during the Sutak period. This is the time to mourn within the confines of the family.
- The wife of the deceased does not even cook food at home until the Sutak period ends. All the members of the house wear simple clothes and maintain simplicity in food. During this period it is advised to avoid wearing colored clothes.
- Do not mingle with outsiders during Sutak. There is a rule to stay inside the house, not to go to anyone else’s house. It is prohibited to do this for 40 days.
- Patak ends only after immersing the bones, bathing in the holy river and offering feast to the Brahmin.
what to do in sutak
- Eating simple food, sleeping on the ground, and mourning are expressed in Sutak.
- Purification of the house (by sprinkling Ganga water, cow urine) is mandatory.
