Nursery admission starting from March 2, Education Department issued new rules for admission

The process of admission of small children i.e. nursery admission is about to start in the schools of Delhi. The Education Department has released the rules for admission to Nursery, KG and Class 1 for the academic session 2026-27. This news is very important for those parents who want to send their 3 to 6 year old children to a good school. The department has issued a circular, in which the entire process has been explained.

Nursery admission starting from this day

The admission process in nursery is starting from 2nd March 2026. For this, only children living in Delhi can apply. Children living near schools will get more priority. If the child lives within a radius of 1 kilometer from the school, he will get the first chance. After this, priority will be given to children living within a radius of 3 kilometers. If the child lives more than 3 kilometers away, the parents will have to give an affidavit that they will make safe travel arrangements for the child.

When will the application forms be available?

Application forms for nursery admission will be available in schools from March 2 to March 16, 2026. The time for taking and submitting the forms has been kept from 8:30 am to 11:30 am (in morning and general shift schools). At the same time, in evening shift schools the timing will be from 2:30 to 5:30 pm. After filling the form, it will have to be dropped in the school drop box. There will be no fee for taking or submitting the form.

The list will come on March 18

Schools will list all applications on March 18, 2026. If there is any mistake or deficiency in it, it will also be shown. Parents can improve by seeing their mistakes. After this, a lottery (draw of lots) will be held on March 20, 2026, which will be done in a transparent manner, so that no one has any complaint. The list of selected children will be posted on the notice boards of schools on 23 March 2026. The selected children will have to enroll in the school from 24 March to 2 April 2026. If any seat remains vacant then a waiting list will be created. Admission from waiting list will be from 4th April to 7th April 2026.

How will the age of the child be decided?

The age of the child will be decided by 31 March 2026. The age of the child in nursery should be more than 3 years and less than 4 years. For KG, the age should be more than 4 years and less than 5 years, whereas for Class 1, the age should be more than 5 years and less than 6 years. Age will be calculated on the basis of birth certificate. Some important documents will have to be attached with the application. These include the birth certificate of the child, residence certificate of Delhi (like Aadhar card, ration card or electricity bill), photograph of the child and if there is any reservation, its certificate will have to be given. If the child is disabled or belongs to a deprived class, he can get temporary admission for 30 days even if there are no documents. After this the documents will have to be submitted.

Which children will get reservation?

The rules of reservation in nursery admission are also clear. 15 percent seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC), 7.5 percent for Scheduled Tribe (ST), 3 percent for disabled children and 2 percent for children of education department employees. This reservation is applicable in private schools, so that all children get equal opportunity. The child’s vaccination certificate will have to be submitted to the school within 6 months after admission. If vaccination is not done then admission may be stopped.
