Why did 19 American lawmakers reach the Indian Embassy in Washington, what happened there?

A special exhibition showing the human cost of terrorism was organized by the Indian Embassy on Capitol Hill in the US capital Washington DC. This exhibition was organized on the occasion of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terrorist attack. 19 US MPs and about 60 parliamentary staff participated in this program. During the exhibition, a 9/11 attack survivor spoke virtually, while a Pentagon responder also participated online.

The objective of this exhibition was to show the impact of terrorism and especially to raise awareness against Pakistan sponsored terrorism. The Indian Embassy named it The Human Cost of Terrorism. Indian Ambassador to America Vinay Mohan Kwatra was present in the program. He was also joined by Bill Huizenga, chairman of the South and Central Asia Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Statement by Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra

India’s Ambassador to America, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, while keeping India’s clear and strong stand on the issue of terrorism, said that India does not see it as a distant problem, but as a living experience. He said that exactly a year ago Pahalgam 26 innocent Indian citizens lost their lives in the terrorist attack. He also mentioned that this time also marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in America, which brings to light the shared pain and experiences of both the countries. Recalling major terrorist attacks in India, Kwatra said that more than 250 people were killed in the March 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, which shook the country’s financial capital. After this, the Indian Parliament was attacked on 22 December 2001 and then on 26 November 2008, Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists attacked many places in Mumbai.

Discussion on damage caused by terrorism

Apart from this, House Foreign Affairs Committee members Brad Sherman, Brad Schneider and Michael Baumgartmer also attended the program. India Caucus co-chairman Rich McCormick and Senator Chris Coons also participated in the exhibition. Other prominent people included Dave Taylor and April McClain. Everyone closely saw and understood the damage caused by terrorism and its human aspects through this exhibition. This event also reflects the shared concern and cooperation between India and America against terrorism.
