Along with Raghav Chadha, 7 MPs including Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh will join BJP. Raghav Chadha announced this on Friday (April 24), giving a big blow to the Aam Aadmi Party. Along with Raghav Chadha, Swati Maliwal, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Vikram Sahni, Rajinder Gupta and Harbhajan Singh will join BJP. All of them are your MPs in Rajya Sabha. AAP has a total of 10 MPs in Rajya Sabha. That means now two-thirds of your Rajya Sabha MPs are going to join BJP.
What does mathematics say according to the anti-deflection law?
Under India’s Anti-Defection Law (Tenth Schedule of the Constitution), if a split in a party is to be recognized and disqualification is to be avoided, at least two-thirds (2/3) of the party’s members must be present in the Rajya Sabha.
- Total members in Rajya Sabha of AAP = 10
- Only if at least 7 MPs come together, the split will be considered valid under the defection law.
- Support of 7/10 MPs will be necessary for Raghav Chadha, only then it will be possible to join BJP while avoiding anti-defection law.
- That means 70% AAP Rajya Sabha MPs will have to be brought along.
What allegations did Raghav Chadha make against AAP?
Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha made serious allegations on the decision to leave the party and said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has completely deviated from its basic principles. He said, “The AAP to which I nourished with my blood for 15 years and gave 15 years of my youth. She has completely deviated from her principles and her values. Now this party is not working for the national interest but for its personal benefit.
I’m the Right Man in the Wrong Party- Raghav Chadha
He further said, “For the last few years I was feeling that ‘I am the right man in the wrong party’.” Therefore, today I announce that I am moving away from Aam Aadmi Party and going to the people. Before joining politics, I was a CA. Today, those who are leaving the Aam Aadmi Party and separating, some are world class cricketers, some are Padma Shris, some are social activists. All these people left everything and came with the resolve of corruption free India and established this party. Hardly anyone would know the Aam Aadmi Party better than me.
