According to a study published in NIH, moist sponges become a very favorable place for microbes. However, this does not at all mean that the scrubber directly causes cancer.

Does it really cause cancer risk?

Regarding this, Dr. Abhijeet Kotabagi told TOI that linking kitchen sponge with cancer definitely creates fear, but it is important to understand the difference between science and myth. According to him, bacteria can accumulate in sponges, especially if they are not cleaned or changed from time to time. But till now no scientific evidence has been found to prove that kitchen sponge directly causes cancer. The real danger is from harmful bacteria that cause infection, which can contaminate food and kitchen surfaces.

The risk of stomach related problems increases

Experts say that using the same scrubber for a long time can increase the risk of stomach related problems. Dirty sponges can transfer bacteria to utensils and food, increasing the risk of food poisoning and stomach infections. That means the problem is not cancer, but poor kitchen hygiene. The good thing is that it is very easy to avoid this danger. Experts recommend that the kitchen sponge should be changed every one to two weeks. After use, let it dry completely and clean it with warm water from time to time. As far as possible, use different scrubbers for washing utensils and cleaning the kitchen.
