BJP has registered a spectacular victory in the by-election held on Falta assembly seat of West Bengal. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda got 1 lakh 49 thousand 666 votes and secured more than 71 percent votes. At the same time, CPIM’s Shambhunath Kurmi stood second with 40 thousand 645 votes, which is about 20 percent of the total votes, while Congress candidate Abdur Razzaq stood third. TMC candidate Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth place with just 7,783 votes and his deposit was forfeited.

Falta seat falls in the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency, from where TMC national general secretary and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee is the MP. Falta had given about 89 percent votes to TMC in the Lok Sabha elections held two years ago and Banerjee had won by about 1.68 lakh votes. BJP had got 36.75 percent votes in Falta in the 2021 assembly elections, which increased to more than 71 percent this time. At the same time, TMC had got about 56 percent votes, which came down to only 3.7 percent.

Why did TMC’s tension increase?

After the defeat in Bengal, TMC is trying to rebuild its organization, but its tension has increased due to getting only 7,783 votes on its symbol in Falta. Actually, a large number of Muslim community votes for TMC, apart from this, a special section of Hindu society also likes Mamata Banerjee and is also her traditional voter. Along with these, women and beneficiaries of government schemes have also been voting for TMC, but the results of Falta have shown that TMC will have to work hard to regain its position.
