‘A group of fools…’, politics begins over changing the name of a road in Kolkata

West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari on Saturday (June 20, 2026) welcomed the decision of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to rename Suhrawardy Avenue, a major road of the city, as Gopal Mukherjee Road, after which Congress hit back at this decision of Kolkata Municipal Corporation and targeted BJP and Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari.

Pawan Kheda targeted BJP

Taking aim at BJP, Congress media department head Pawan Kheda shared a post on social media platform X on Sunday (June 21, 2026). He said, ‘These BJP people are a group of fools. These illiterate people do not know the difference between Hasan Suhrawardy and Hussain Suhrawardy.

Meanwhile, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh said, ‘Hassan Suhrawardy, after whom this road was named, was the Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. After him, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee became the Vice-Chancellor, while Shyama Prasad Mukherjee’s father Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee had held this post a few years before him, but the entire political science does not teach you such things.

What did the Chief Minister of Bengal say on changing the name of the road??

According to IANS report, West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari has termed changing the name of the road under Kolkata Municipal Corporation as a step to correct a historical mistake. Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari Shared a post regarding this on X platform. He said that this historic decision taken by Kolkata Municipal Corporation is just and appropriate. For decades, an important road in the city was named after a man who was accused of abusing power and instigating the massacre of innocent civilians for political gain.
