Farmers from different states of the country demonstrated at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday (23 June) under the banner of United Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) in protest against the proposed India-US trade deal. Farmers demanded the government not to take this agreement forward and said that it could have a negative impact on Indian agriculture and the livelihood of farmers.
Farmers protest against trade deal
Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal said, “There are many important issues in the country, but today farmers have come together to express their concern on the issue of India-US trade deal.” This agreement is related to the future of farmers.
Questions on government’s claims
Jagjit Singh Dallewal further said that the government is saying that this agreement will not cause any harm to the farmers, but the farmers fear that if a large amount of agricultural products come to India from abroad, then the crop and yield of the domestic farmers will be affected.
Talk of self-reliance and question of imports
He said, “The government has earlier been talking about self-reliant India and reducing dependence on foreign goods. In such a situation, if the Indian market is opened for American products, the American economy will benefit from it, while Indian farmers will suffer losses.
Concern over soybean oil and corn
The farmer leader also said that if cheaper soybean oil comes to India from America, then who will buy the produce of the oilseed producing farmers of the country? Similarly, if maize and its related products start coming from abroad, then the demand for Indian maize may also be affected.
Question of farmers’ future- Dallewal
Dallewal said that this is not just a trade agreement, but a question of the future of the country’s farmers and future generations. Therefore, farmers are ready to fight a tough battle on this issue.
Dallewal warned the government
Dallewal said that the farmers of the country are not going to back down. He said, “The government should take the concerns of farmers seriously. If the farmers of the entire country come together and join the movement, then the situation can become very serious.
