Muharram… means the day of remembrance of sorrow, patience and sacrifice. Every year, on this occasion, Shia Muslims take out a mourning procession remembering the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, pick up tiaras and express their grief in their own way. But alas, this time also in many parts of the country this festival of mourning turned into real mourning due to accidents and violence. At some places, people lost their lives when the tazia collided with the high tension line, at some places a minor dispute took the form of a bloody conflict and at some places in the name of a religious event, such scenes came to light which put both the administration and the society in the circle of questions.

Police took out flag march

Muharram processions took place peacefully in many cities of the country. Thousands of people took out mourning processions in Ranchi, Moradabad and Mumbai and paid tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain. Whereas in sensitive areas like Prayagraj, Sambhal and Delhi, the police took out flag marches in advance and strengthened the security arrangements so that no tension arises, but despite these preparations, such news came from some states which shocked the entire country.

Controversy in Darbhanga on Muharram

The most sensational incident took place in Darbhanga, Bihar, where a minor dispute during Muharram quickly turned into a bloody conflict. It is alleged that a person named Sunil Sahni shot and extinguished the tube light near Imambara. This was opposed by Mohammad Mobin, who is a sub-inspector in Bihar Police. There was an altercation between the two and then according to the allegations, Sunil shot Mobin in the stomach. After this the situation went out of control and Mobin’s supporters killed Sunil Sahni with a sharp weapon. This violence that took place during a religious event left many questions as to how and why such a big dispute happened.

Muharram procession turns into an accident in MP

On the other hand, the Muharram procession in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh turned into a major accident. The height of the Tajiya which came out with the band was so high that it collided with the high tension power line. As soon as the strong electric current spread, there was chaos there. More than ten people sustained burn injuries and Rashid, Hussain and Arbaaz died during treatment in the hospital. Eyewitnesses are blaming the negligence of the electricity department, while the police are also considering the high height of Tajiya as a major reason for the accident.

Tajiya collided with high tension wire in UP

Almost a similar scene unfolded in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. Here too the tall Tajiya collided with the high tension line and many people got electrocuted. Eight people sustained serious burn injuries, including Saif who died during treatment. This incident once again raised the question why despite warnings every year, safety standards are not followed between power lines and processions.

To avoid such accidents, this time the police launched a different campaign in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. SP Rural Anuj Choudhary himself along with the policemen went out to measure the height of the Tajiyas with an inch tape so that none of the Tajiyas were of such height that it could hit the power lines. Although this campaign was started for security purposes, it also created controversy after its pictures went viral on social media. Some people alleged that the officer did not remove his shoes while measuring the height of the Tajiya, which hurt religious sentiments.

Car blown up in Ujjain

A surprising video also surfaced from Badnagar in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh. During Muharram, a car was blown up by planting explosives with the help of a crane. After the video went viral, the police took action and arrested the accused named Shoaib, Zahid and Taslim and also took out a procession. Political reactions also came to light on this incident and some leaders demanded imposition of National Security Act on the accused.

Amidst these incidents a big question is coming up again and again. Be it the Kanwar Yatra or the Tajiya procession, the administration sets height and safety rules every year. Despite this, why are these rules ignored in many places? Is it not as important to follow safety standards in religious events as it is to respect religious traditions?

CM Yogi gave strict messages

In this context, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath also gave a strict message regarding law and order during Muharram. He clearly said that everyone has the right to follow their religious traditions, but law and public safety will not be compromised under any circumstances. The priority of the administration is that religious events should be conducted with reverence and peace and should not become the cause of violence or accidents.

The message of Muharram is of sacrifice, justice and patience. But when religious events turn into accidents due to violence, carelessness or ignorance of the law, the biggest loss is to the message that this festival is celebrated to remember. Therefore, it is important that along with faith, both security and law are equally respected, so that this festival of mourning does not remain a permanent mourning for any family.
