Why do women suffer from thyroid problems more than men, know the reason behind this?

Why Women Get Thyroid Problems: If there is one disease that is heard the most in any household, it is thyroid and the surprising thing is that among its patients, the number of women is more than that of men. Many times people associate it only with increasing weight or weakness, but the truth is that thyroid affects many important functions of the body. In such a situation, the question arises that why do women have more thyroid problems than men? Not just one, but many biological and hormonal reasons are considered responsible behind this.

Why does this problem occur more in women?

According to cadabamsdiagnostics, which provides information about health, one out of every eight women may suffer from thyroid problems at some point in her lifetime. The risk of getting this disease in women is considered to be about five to eight times higher than that of men. Its risk also increases with increasing age and in many cases its symptoms remain unrecognized for a long time. Actually, thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland present in the neck, which produces hormones that control the body’s metabolism, energy and growth. When this gland starts producing more or less hormones than required, then problems like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism arise.

What are the reasons behind this?

Hormonal changes and autoimmune diseases are considered to be the biggest reasons for the high incidence of thyroid problems in women. The estrogen hormone and immune system in women’s bodies are different from those of men. This is the reason why autoimmune diseases are more common in women. In such a situation, the body’s immune system mistakenly starts attacking the thyroid gland itself, due to which the risk of diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease increases.

In which phases do these changes occur in women’s lives?

Certain stages of women’s life also increase the risk of thyroid. Hormones change rapidly in the body during pregnancy, postpartum period and menopause. These changes can also affect the thyroid gland. This is the reason why women are advised to get regular checkups done in these stages. The effect of thyroid is not limited to just weight or fatigue. It can make periods irregular, cause difficulty in conceiving and can affect the health of both mother and baby during pregnancy. At the same time, with increasing age, its symptoms sometimes resemble menopause, due to which the diagnosis of the disease can be delayed.

Which symptoms should not be ignored?

If you feel tired continuously without any reason, weight starts increasing or decreasing suddenly, hair starts falling, skin becomes dry, mood starts changing frequently or swelling in the neck appears, then these should not be ignored. If such symptoms appear, it is better to consult a doctor and get important blood tests done like TSH, T3 and T4. Thyroid can be controlled to a great extent with timely diagnosis and proper treatment.
