The two leaders discussed a range of issues and identified three key areas to take the partnership forward. Takaichi said that the first goal is to deepen India-Japan strategic cooperation. Referring to the recently updated FOIP (Free and Open Indo-Pacific) policy, he said that its focus is on self-reliance and flexibility.

He said that Prime Minister Modi considers the ocean as a medium for regional stability and development and his ‘Great Ocean’ initiative is in line with the objectives of FOIP. Both sides agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation and maritime security to achieve common goals.

The Japanese PM said that a destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and a ship of the Indian Navy are planning to conduct a joint operation. Joint exercises will be increased in the Indian Ocean. Also, cooperation in naval maintenance, repair and defense equipment under ‘Make in India’ will be strengthened.

Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Developed India’ initiative, Takaichi said that both the countries want to strengthen their economies through future-focused investments. He said that this year the two countries are completing 75 years of diplomatic relations. He expressed confidence that India-Japan relations are now entering a new phase and he will be eagerly waiting to welcome Prime Minister Modi in Japan next time.
