New hope in the treatment of brain cancer, Vitamin B12 therapy showed wonders

Brain Cancer: A big news has come out from Washington DC. In a new study published in a science magazine named Oncoscience, a new method has been discovered for the treatment of the most dangerous cancer of the brain named Glioblastoma. This cancer is so deadly that despite surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, patients usually do not survive more than 1 month. A major reason for this is the blood-brain barrier, i.e. a protective wall around the brain, which does not allow most medicines to reach the tumor inside the brain. This research was led by Joseph A. of Nitric Oxide Services Company. Bauer and scientists from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Tausig Cancer Center have done this together.

Special medicine made from Vitamin B12

Scientists have prepared a compound named Nitrosylcobalamin, which is called NO-CBL in short. It is actually a modified form of Vitamin B12, which releases nitric oxide in the body. To test this drug, scientists adopted several methods, such as looking at its effect on a large panel of cancer cells, testing it on glioblastoma tumors in mice, and testing it on human cancer cells by mixing it with other drugs. The results found that this drug showed effect on many types of cancer, and its moderate effect was also seen on brain-related tumors. The biggest thing is that in the experiments conducted on animals, after giving this medicine in the body, it successfully crossed the blood-brain barrier and reached directly to the tumor.

It has effect by staying in the tumor

Another special thing revealed in the research is that this medicine goes into the tumor and remains there for a long time. Nitrate levels within the tumor remained high for at least 24 hours after treatment, while levels quickly declined in other normal parts of the body. This shows that this drug specifically stops in the tumor itself and releases nitric oxide directly there. Apart from this, when this drug was tested in the lab in combination with existing cancer treatments like Trail and Temozolomide, the growth of cancer cells was stopped more than before.

This means that this drug, while working alone, can make existing treatments more effective, even on tumors that have become resistant to drugs like temozolomide. Although these results are certainly promising, scientists have clearly said that this is still an initial pilot study and more in-depth research will be needed before using it in actual treatment.
