The accused named Peter Michael Larsen told the police that he deliberately attacked the Indian man Sohail because he was a Muslim. He allegedly wanted to harm Muslims. Police have registered a case against Larson on charges of attempt to murder and possession of dangerous weapons. He is being held in the Salt Lake County Jail.

According to ABC Salt Lake City report, Luna Nunez, who works at a jewelry store near where the attack took place, said that Larson first asked Sohail where he was from. He told, ‘The accused asked where are you from. The person replied, I am from India, my name is Sohail. After this Larsen asked whether you are a Muslim. As soon as Sohail said where, the accused started stabbing him.

Imam Shuaib Deen of the Utah Islamic Center told the Salt Lake Tribune that Larson also asked Sohail for a water bottle. When Sohail turned to take the bottle, the accused allegedly took out a knife and attacked him. The victim has undergone several surgeries and his condition remains critical. Even before the police reached the spot, the people present there caught the accused Larson.
