There are more government colleges, yet more MBBS seats in private… Understand the complete mathematics from NMC data.

MBBS Seats Matrix 2026: The National Medical Commission in the country has released the matrix of MBBS seats for the academic level 2026-27, in which 9911 new seats have been approved. With this, the total number of MBBS seats in the country has increased to a record 1,36,939. However, the interesting thing is that despite the number of government medical colleges in the country being more than that of private colleges, MBBS seats are more than that of private institutes.

According to the seat matrix released by NMC, a total of 1,27,028 MBBS seats have been renewed this year, while 9,911 new seats have been added. These seats have become available through new medical colleges and increasing seats in already running colleges. This increase has come at a time when more than 22 lakh students appear for the NEET UG exam every year, but the number of MBBS seats seems very less in comparison.

Why are there more seats in government colleges, yet more seats in private ones?

According to NMC data, there are currently 823 medical colleges in the country. These include 441 government and 382 private colleges, which means that government institutions are ahead in terms of the number of colleges. Despite this, if we talk about seats, there are a total of 63,996 MBBS seats in government colleges, whereas 73,643 seats are available in private medical colleges, that is, there are more than 10 thousand MBBS seats in private colleges as compared to government institutions. This is the reason why despite the large number of government colleges, the share of private colleges in the total MBBS seats appears to be higher. Out of 9,911 seats increased this year, private colleges have got 7,800 seats, whereas only 2,111 seats have been increased in government colleges, that is, about 79 percent share in the additional seats approved this time was for private medical colleges.

How did the seats increase so rapidly?

According to MK Ramesh, resident member of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of NMC, this increase has been possible due to the changes made in the Graduate Medical Education Regulation 2023. Earlier, a medical college could apply for increasing MBBS seats only after the completion of its first batch. After the implementation of the new rules, colleges can now apply for increasing seats from the second year onwards if they meet the prescribed standards. Due to this, the process of seat expansion became much faster than before.

How many seats increased in new colleges and how many in old colleges?

According to NMC, out of 9,911 additional MBBS seats approved this year, 2400 seats are attached to 25 new medical colleges. These include 7 government and 18 private medical colleges. The remaining 7,511 seats have been added through increasing seats in the already running medical colleges. Apart from this, if we talk about states, Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of 88 medical colleges, out of which 49 are government colleges, which is the highest in the country. A total of 14,000 MBBS seats are available in the state. There are a total of 75 medical colleges in Karnataka, but it has the highest number of MBBS seats in the country with 15,395 MBBS seats. There are 51 private medical colleges in the state, which is the highest in the entire country. Apart from this, Maharashtra has 86 medical colleges and 13,099 seats while Tamil Nadu has 78 medical colleges and 13,999 MBBS seats. There are 51 medical colleges in Rajasthan, where a total of 80 medical seats are available.

NMC’s strict warning to the college

NMC has also warned medical colleges not to admit students more than the prescribed capacity. The Commission said that regulatory and punitive action will be taken under the NMC Act 2019 if admission is given more than the sanctioned seats. Also, all major medical colleges have been asked to verify their sanctioned seats before the start of counseling and to inform the Medical Assessment and Rating Board in case of any discrepancy.
