HIV spreads rapidly among children in Sindh, Pakistan, 3.5 lakh people are forced to live like this in the entire country

Know on what basis Pakistan’s health system is running. Now people have been found positive in a case of HIV infection spread in a government hospital in the major city Karachi. Officials have said that this number has increased rapidly in recent weeks. Sindh Labor Minister Saeed Ghani said earlier this week that more than 10,500 people were screened in and around Kulsoom Bai Walika Hospital, run by the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution. Of these, 120 people were found positive. Children of Sindh province have been affected by this infection.

According to Aljazeera, a screening drive was conducted in another center of this organization in Landhi area. 10 more cases were reported in this. This institution is an autonomous body. It provides healthcare, medical facilities and financial assistance to industrial and commercial workers and their dependents across Sindh. The crisis of this hospital became visible to the people for the first time in November 2025. Here, residents of Karachi’s Site Town observed a cluster of infections among children undergoing treatment there. It started in October 2025. When the Health Department found 6 cases of HIV.

At the same time, Pakistan’s Shahbaz Sharif government has ordered to ban poor quality syringes on July 3. Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has said that HIV testing before surgery will be mandatory across the country.

What has the Sindh Chief Minister said on the whole matter?

On July 14, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah informed that serious shortcomings had been found in two internal investigations. These include not properly following the rules to avoid infection, inadequate use of security equipment and wrong use of single-use syringes. In November last year, 16 HIV positive children were identified. Apart from this, a report has been submitted to the Lokpal of the province on June 19. In this, 78 infections and 6 deaths have been confirmed. In this, some hospital employees have been held responsible for administrative and supervisory failures.

Since then this number has increased. A new infection has been confirmed at the SESSI Centre. Minister Ghani has said that all the cases are related to contact before October 2025. Screening will continue despite apprehensions about the number of cases. On July 3, show cause notices were issued to 37 doctors and hospital employees. Also 14 days time has been given. Ghani has said that those responsible will be prosecuted. He will be fired from his job. Apart from this, Ghani himself has indirectly accepted the responsibility. He has said that if it helps in resolving this crisis, he would have no objection to resigning.

What has been said on the petition filed in Sindh High Court?

Earlier, Sindh High Court filed a petition. It was alleged that this infection spread due to reused syringes. Talking to journalists on July 4, Ghani said that the infection did not spread through re-use of syringes, but KBV Hospital uses auto disable syringes. These cannot be reused. Apart from this, in the petition filed in the court, it has been said that the number of victims should be hidden.

What is the stand of WHO and other health agencies on this whole matter?

Here, WHO and UNAIDS had described this crisis in Pakistan as one of the fastest spreading HIV epidemics in WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean region. Where there has been 200 percent increase in 15 years. About 3 lakh 50 thousand people are living with HIV in Pakistan. About 80 percent of these people do not know about their condition. Apart from these, only 38 percent children are getting treatment. Now in this entire matter, the Sindh High Court has asked the state government to respond to a petition by July 20.
