United Nations reacted to the ongoing protests in PoK, slammed Pakistan, know what was said?

The Human Rights Office of the United Nations has expressed its concern about the unrest in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). There has been a demand for an impartial investigation into the incidents of death of protesters and security forces personnel.

A statement issued from Geneva said that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Friday appealed to maintain peace amid the unrest in PoK ahead of regional elections to be held later this month. According to the statement, several deaths have been reported since June. Most of them are protesters, while some are also security forces personnel.

Turk demanded an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into all incidents of death during the unrest. He said that the incidents of death of both protesters and members of the security forces should be investigated. The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which is leading the protests, has been banned under anti-terrorism laws, accusing it of posing a threat to public order and security.

The statement said that criminalizing a civil organization and imposing stringent restrictions on public meetings raises serious concerns about the violation of fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, right to peaceful assembly and freedom of association.

What was said about the ban on internet services?
Turk said that detained JAAC leaders should be given access to legal aid and access to their families. Also, their fair trial and legal rights should be fully protected. The statement said that the restrictions imposed on internet services in the area are also a matter of concern. “We urge the authorities to fully restore internet services across the region,” the statement said. Turk also called for a meaningful and inclusive political dialogue to address the problems and grievances of local people.
