Zoharan Mamdani turns back after threatening Netanyahu with arrest, now says – “We can’t do this”

America’s New York City Mayor Zoharan Mamdani had threatened to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Now another statement of his has come out on this, in which he said that he cannot do this himself. He said that his city cannot arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu itself.

However, he has appealed to the US central government to arrest netanyahu. Zohran Mamdani said late on Tuesday that his city cannot enforce the arrest warrant issued by the International Court of Justice (ICC) against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Called Netanyahu a war criminal

Mamdani released a video on social media calling Netanyahu a “war criminal” and saying he was not welcome in New York City. Zohran Mamdani said, “It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to execute this warrant. However, the central government has this authority and I appeal to them to join the ICC and execute this warrant.”

Zoharan Mamdani previously said he and the city’s legal department were discussing whether Netanyahu could be arrested if he comes to New York for the United Nations General Assembly in September. Now the Mamdani administration, after reviewing all legal avenues, has acknowledged that New York City does not have the legal authority to arrest Netanyahu alone.

On Mamdani’s statement, US President Donald Trump had said on social media, “As long as Netanyahu is in America, he will not be arrested at any cost.”

Israel’s ambassador to UN said – do your work

At the same time, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Danny Danon hit back at Mayor Mamdani, saying, “Enough! You have been elected to serve the people of New York, not to promote Hamas. Do your job.”

In 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The court alleges that during the Gaza war, starvation was used as a weapon and civilians were targeted. However, Israeli officials have completely rejected all these allegations.
