What is eclipse in Puranas

The oldest mention of eclipse is found in Mandal 5, Sukta 40 of Rigveda. It is told that a demon named Swarbhanu had covered the Sun with darkness due to which there was darkness all around. Then Maharishi Atri, with the influence of his penance and Vedic mantras, manifested the light of the sun again. In later Puranas, this incident has been linked to the story of Rahu-Ketu.
