Washington: Indian-American leader Amish Shah has won the Democratic Party’s primary from the First Congressional District of Arizona state of America. Amish Shah, considered a moderate Democrat, defeated Marlene Gallen-Woods, a candidate supported by the party’s top leadership and former TV journalist, in this contest. Now in the US Congress (House of Representatives) elections to be held in November, Amish Shah will face Republican candidate and former NFL kicker Jay Feely. Jay Feely has the support of US President Donald Trump.

Won the primary by connecting with people

Amish Shah is an emergency medicine doctor by profession and has also been a three-time member of the Arizona Assembly. During the election campaign, he contacted people door-to-door and reached about 28,000 houses and expressed his views. His public relations style is being considered a major reason for his victory. Marlene Gallen-Woods received the endorsement of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. His defeat marks the third defeat of DCCC-backed candidates this year. Earlier, Jasmeet Bains in California and Joe Baldacci in Maine have also lost the primary elections.

It is now my responsibility to win the trust of every voter in this district, whether they are Democrats who voted for another candidate, independents angry with the political system, or Republican voters frustrated with the current state of the country.

This is the second consecutive time that Amish Shah has won the Democratic primary from this district. Earlier, he had also won the party’s primary in 2024, but lost the general election to Republican leader David Schweikert by a margin of 4 percentage points.
