Government told why it did not send any alert to Pakistan, also gave a big message on Indus Water Treaty

Amidst the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan regarding the Indus Water Treaty, the discussion regarding flood related information has once again intensified. Meanwhile, Indian government sources have clarified that no flood warning was sent to Pakistan because such a situation did not arise.

According to government sources, the current water flow in Chenab (Akhnoor), Tawi (Jammu), Sutlej (Ferozepur) and Ravi (Madhopur) rivers is well below the prescribed extraordinary flow or high flood limit. In such a situation, there was no need to send an alert to Pakistan.

Alert not sent

Sources said that under Article IV(8) of the Indus Water Treaty, flood-related information is shared only in those circumstances when extraordinary water flow or flood conditions can affect the other party. Since there is no such situation at present, no information was sent from India.

The government also reminded that in April 2025, India had decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty (Abeyance). After this, under the treaty, India no longer had the obligation to share information regularly. However, India has continued to share flood-related information, taking a humanitarian approach, in situations where there is a genuine threat of extraordinary flooding.

According to sources, exchange of flood related information is limited only to extraordinary water flows recorded at the terminal sites of Chenab, Tawi, Ravi and Sutlej. There is no fixed limit for extraordinary water flow in the treaty. For this, standards are set on the basis of the prevalent working methodology of India-Pakistan Indus Commission.

Warning 23 times last year

The government also informed that during the 2025 flood season, India had sent 23 flood warnings to Pakistan through the Indian High Commission. The same system is applicable in the year 2026 also. But at this time, due to the water level being below the prescribed limit, there was no need to send any kind of warning to Pakistan.

The Government of India says that in the current situation, flood related protocols are being followed on the basis of facts and actual circumstances. Therefore, the claims being made about not sending an alert to Pakistan have no connection with the actual situation.

Before this, India has once again clarified its stand on the Indus Water Treaty in the United Nations and has given a blunt message to Pakistan. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations P. Harish said that normal cooperation is not possible with a country that adopts cross-border terrorism as a state policy. Amidst Pakistan continuously raising the issue of Indus Water Treaty in international forums, India made it clear that the real issue is not water but terrorism. Until cross-border terrorism is stopped, India will continue on its current stand.
