Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigns, reason revealed

Dhaka: Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigned on Friday, almost two years before the end of his five-year term. Shahabuddin has submitted his resignation to Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed citing health reasons. His resignation comes amid reports that the government was not happy with his continuing in the post.

It was difficult to contact Sheikh Hasina

In fact, it is believed that he had good relations with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to Bangladeshi media reports, the government was angry that Shahabuddin had recently tried to contact Sheikh Hasina again. Shahabuddin’s resignation comes just days after Sheikh Hasina announced that she would return to Bangladesh in December and surrender after being convicted by the War Crimes Tribunal.

Shahabuddin is an old aide of Sheikh Hasina and has contested the elections on the ticket of the now banned Awami League. He was elected president unopposed for a five-year term in 2023. He was the last constitutional holder of the previous Awami League government, who remained in office even after the 2024 coup that forced Hasina to flee to India. The resignation comes at a politically sensitive time when Prime Minister Tariq Rahman’s government is preparing for the return of Sheikh Hasina.

Speaker of Parliament will take over as interim President

Under the Constitution of Bangladesh, Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will serve as interim president until the country elects a new president. Article 54 of the Constitution of Bangladesh states that if the office of the President becomes vacant or the President is unable to perform his duties, the Speaker assumes office as Acting President until a new President is elected.

Sheikh Hassani has been sentenced to death

Let us tell you that in November last year, the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh had sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in their absence for their role in the action taken during the 2024 student protests.
