Tension between Iran and Ukraine has increased further after the attack on an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian Sea. Iran has given a strong warning to Ukraine, calling this incident a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clearly said that this attack will definitely be responded to and it will not be left without response.
Iran on Saturday publicly alleged that Ukraine targeted one of its commercial ships in the Caspian Sea. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the ship exploded after the attack in the early hours of Saturday, in which one sailor died and another was seriously injured.
Issue also raised with European Union and Russia
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that he spoke separately with European Union foreign policy chief Kaza Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov regarding this incident. Araghchi wrote on the social media platform X that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attacked an Iranian commercial ship, killing a sailor. Calling it a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter, he alleged that this step was taken at the behest of Israel, so that Europe could be drawn deeper into the war.
He said that during the conversation with both the leaders, he made it clear that this step taken by Kiev will not be left unanswered.
Iran said- We have no role in Russia-Ukraine war
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said an explosion occurred on board the ship after the attack, resulting in the death and injury of several crew members. The ministry also reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran has had no involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war. Iran also rejected claims that it has been described as an ally of any party in this conflict.
Zelensky confirms long-range attacks
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine has taken long-range military action in the Caspian Sea. Ukrainian intelligence agencies claimed on Telegram that the drone attacks were carried out on cargo ships that were under international sanctions and were being used to transport military goods between Iran and Russia.
Ukrainian diplomat summoned
After the incident, Iranian state TV reported that the Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s acting diplomat (Chargé d’Affaires) on Saturday. Iran lodged a strong diplomatic protest, terming the attack as a hostile and criminal act, and expressed its protest to Ukraine through official channels.
